David Pell
David began competing as a junior track cyclist. In 1996 he rode his first national titles in Perth, then again each year until 2001, gaining many placing. In 1998, as an under 19, he was 2nd in the points race, 3rd in the pursuit, and 3rd in the teams pursuit. These results earned him a place in the Australian team to compete at the junior world titles in Cuba.
After the world titles, David made the move from track to road racing, and the same year was 2nd in the National Road Time Trial. In the following years, he developed on the road, and in 2001 became Under 23 National Club Champion in the road race and was also runner up in the National Road series with placings in many major events.
In 2002 David was selected as a member of the Australian Under 23 team that competed in Italy. He spent 2002 racing in Europe, and gained 9th place in an Under 23 World Cup event. He then rode his first Road World Title in Belgium Zolder.
In 2003 he finished 4th in the individual time trial at the national titles, which helped him gain a position on a small German pro team where he spent the remainder of the year, "learning and racing with some of the best bike riders in the world". A highlight of racing in Europe was being in a race with Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich and the then World Road Champion Mario Cippollini.
David returned to Australia and began preparing for the possibility of a place in the Australian Olympic Games squad. After missing a place in the team, David joined Team UNO, and said: "I have been given a great opportunity with a great lot of people and look forward to gaining some great results for the team".
In his short time with Team UNO, David has gained:
- 1st in the De Bortoli Tour,
- 5th in the Tattersall's Cup 1,
- 4th in the Tattersall's Cup 2,
- 2nd in the Shepparton classic,
- fastest time in the Melbourne to Ballarat
3rd in the Melbourne to Warrnambool.
