Leigh Howard
Leigh Howard started cycling at the age of 9 and became Australian Junior Champion at 15, collecting four Australian track records on the way.
At the 2005 Australian Track Championships, in Brisbane in March, Leigh was named Champion of Champions when he won all 6 out of 6 under 17 championships – a feat never before achieved - and in the process broke two more Australian records: the 500 m individual time trial record of former World Champion Shane Kelly, and the flying 200 m record of Olympian Ben Kersten. Leigh won gold in the 500m time trial, sprint, scratch race, team sprint, team pursuit and individual pursuit.
His previous Australian records were set in 2003: the U15 flying 200 metres when he stopped the clock at 12.295; and a standing 500 metre of 36.65 set at the Adelaide Super Drome.
At the 2005 Australian Road Championships, in Mooloolaba in September, Leigh won came first in the time trial and the criterium, second in the pairs and third in the road race.
In November, Leigh surprised the racing fraternity when he won the prestigious Sydney Cup, beating Ben Kersten across the line.
Six days later, maintained his winning streak by taking out the Melbourne Cup on Wheels, beating the current Olypmpic champion Ryan Bayley.
