Andy originally started competing in biathlons and triathlons with some school friends in Year 10. After a few years of combining triathlons and bike racing Andy decided to concentrate on cycling as he had a distinct aversion to running and any training associated with it!
After pottering around in the junior ranks for a few years, Andy decided to take cycling a bit more seriously when he joined the senior ranks, and under coach Donna Rae-Szalinski started progressing in the sport.
In 1991 Andy was a consistent top ten finisher in the amateur ranks and was selected in the Victorian team to ride the National Road Championships and as a member of the team in the Individual Road Time Trial Championships. He finished 4th that year in the Victorian Individual Time Trial Championships.
Andy also rode on the track and was placed 3 rd in the Senior Individual Pursuit State Championships, as well as 2nd in the Country Pursuit Championships.
In 1992 he was selected as a member of the Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) Road Development Squad, but shortly into the season a fall resulted in a fractured shoulder blade, damaged knee, and 12 weeks off the bike.
Andy was accepted into the police force in 1993 and has been a full time police officer ever since.
In 2001 he decided to get back on the bike after enjoying the good life in the top paddock for a little too long. Topping the scales at a hefty 105 kilograms Andy's return was a slow but rewarding affair.
In 2002 and 2003 he rode in the Herald Sun Tour and the Bay Series. In 2002 he finished 4th in the Hamilton Round of the Tattersalls Cup and 7th overall in the Tour of Sunraysia, and rode in Henk Vogels' team in the Herald Sun Tour.
In 2003 he spent three months riding in the USA where he was overall winner in the Wednesday Worlds Criterium Series in Denver, Colorado, collecting four wins along the way in the series. He was 3rd in the Colorado State Road Championships and 2nd in the Colorado State Criterium Championships. Andy also recorded several other wins and placings while competing in America, including:
1st in the Los Alomos Road Race, Day 1 and 2;
4th in the Ed Burke Memorial Criterium, Colorado;
2nd in the Andy Finch Road Race, Colorado; and
4th in the Victorian State Individual Time Trial Championships.
